Cures For Depression
There are many different forms of depression. Even though many Americans suffer from depression, they don’t know it or if they do, they won’t admit it even to themselves. Depression afflicts about 14 million Americans. |It is also estimated that less than a third of those affected will ever seek treatment|Fewer than 4.7 million of those, about 1/3, will seek medical help|Unfortunately only a very small percent, less than 1/3, will go for treatment}. Why would people with a medical condition not seek help? Perhaps it is because depression is classified as a mental illness. No one wants to be classified with that label. There was a time in our history when those who suffered mental illness were shunned by society. It was common to lock away people in facilities for the mentally ill when they exhibited signs of depression. Times have changed now, thank goodness. However, old stereotypes have not. This motivates many people to hide their condition from others or even from themselves.
Many elements make up depression. It isn’t easy to diagnose. You have to take into consideration the chemical imbalances in the brain, genetics, biology and even the environment surrounding the individual. Drugs, alcohol and stress all can play a major role in the development of depression. Depression can come from all of these elements. So what are some of the treatments and cures available for those that are inflicted? Just as there are many factors that can cause depression-there are many options to cure it as well. Which option is the best for someone who suffers with depression may be dependent on each individual on a case-to-case basis
Many claim they have a cure for depression. Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. A doctor looks at a number of factors to determine which combination of options to apply. Is there evidence to show that the option works to treat depression? Is a prescription drug or herbal treatment being applied in the proper quantity to show results? Has the method been tested under an appropriate level of scientific method? Let’s examine some of the more popular cures.
Prescription drugs and psychotherapy, combined, has been a common treatment for many forms of depression. To treat depression a typical type of drug recommended is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI. In 1988 Prozac was first used and today it is one of the most popular. Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are just some of those that followed it. All of these work. But side effects are common, including causing more depression. Becoming more common are natural treatments. St Johns Wort extract is one herbal cure gaining popularity quickly. It must have between three and five percent hyperforin to work. It’s success rate is similar to that of Prozac but with fewer side effects. As important as it is to find a cure-it is impossible to do so if those who suffer do not seek it. If you think you have depression, or if someone you know shows the signs, visit a doctor.
