Feeling A Little Job Search Depression?

It takes months or even years to cure or manage serious depression.  Every year, millions of Americans feel the symptoms of depression. A sad note is that it is estimated that two-thirds of those who suffer from the disease never seek treatment. Depression has always been classified as a mental affliction of which some people are ashamed. Therefore, many Americans choose not to be placed into that category. Instead of being considered mentally ill, people try to manage the problem themselves. Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own.

I’ve often wondered about what makes people get depressed. I would hear people say things like, “everyone gets depressed now and then, just shake it off”. Well, there are many factors to consider, so the answer isn’t that simple. Let’s examine some of the most notorious.

Many medical professionals believe that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Why does this chemical problem in the brain happen? Generally, the causes are internal biological issues, genetic disposition, and mental problems but there are external causes as well. There are those inflicted that never really determine what spurned their depression.

The loss of a loved one or treasured possession can have a tremendous impact resulting in depression. Depression can also come from the emotional pain when a close person dies. If you haven’t experienced it yet, keep living. Everyone knows such losses are serious. When people abuse drugs and/or alcohol, the result is often depression.

Of course, another cause of depression can be the whole job search arena. The fact that they may be re-entering the workforce due to a job loss, can make one depressed. I mean they have been gainfully employed for many years, never had to interview or compete for a position and they are now back out looking for work. It might feel like a newborn baby just entering the world. Maybe they are now getting constantly rejected, where before they were the superstar in their department, or just a darn good worker.  Maybe they haven’t been able to find a position, and their family is looking at them, as if they must be doing something wrong. Whether they are right or wrong, doesn’t matter, what they need right now is their support.

Hey, the mental state of an individual can be very fragile depending on their environment and the life events that they have been exposed too. In many cases, depression is passed on genetically. People are high risk for depression when they have a strong background within their family. Many prescription drugs can cause depression. It has been clinically proven and documented that there are some high blood pressure medications can cause depression.  You can search the internet yourself and find out which ones cause depression.

One other major cause of depression is stress. Stress can come from a variety of facets of our life. Even positive events such as a marriage, a new baby or winning an award can cause stress. People tend to stress when they face the unknown, like a new job or new financial obligations. Arguments with family members, disputes with business clients can both cause stress. There are people, a lot of people who are stressed from trying to do a good job at work, meet the expectations of their job and trying to holistically support their families weekly.

Medical professionals have a better chance of administering an appropriate treatment, when the cause is identified. Seek out the medical help that is needed if you or someone you love suffers from depression. Don’t wait. As for being depressed about the whole job search thing, take it a day at a time. Don’t measure your success against anyone else’s, put together a plan of action and use it, until you land that job.
