Got Job Interview Stress?
It’s almost time for you to go into the conference room and be interviewed. You think to yourself, “I’m okay. No, I’m not. I’m going to puke or pee on myself.” Sorry for the graphics, but you get my point. You are just feeling the anticipation before you go in there and knock them off their chairs. In a good way, of course.
Okay, let’s focus. One of the best techniques to handle stress is through breathing. Take deliberate, shallow breaths. Take air in through the nostrils and exhale quietly through your mouth. Don’t exhale like would do if exercising. They might think you are hyperventilating.
Point – You know if you are stressed easily and in what situations. Right? Then master this technique. Practice this relaxation technique before the interview, so your body gets used to slowing down the breathing process and relaxing.
Relaxation techniques such as yoga, and meditation classes, are recommended for anyone who has an extreme case of “interview fright.” The interview can cause panic attacks if the fear is strong enough. Pre-conditioning will do wonders for this type of anxiety.
Someone well-meaning person, might tell you to exercise or listen to classical music. If it works, do it. I do meditation daily, affirmations, exercise several times a week, smile and laugh a lot. It’s worked for me. If someone tells you to have a glass of wine or a beer, or something illegal to calm you before the interview, don’t do it. Dumb idea – although they may mean well. Remember you may be asked to take a drug test on the spot. If so, you’re screwed.
