How To Improve Your Interview Failure Rate Immediately…..Shut Up!

I want to cover one point that will help people improve your interview failure rate immediately. Yes you can recover from interview failure if you don’t get all puffed up as you read this. This is something you may not know, or be aware of. It’s actually a subconscious response for some interviewers.  I remember talking with a candidate prior to an interview and them telling me right away:

  • how many positions they had interviewed for, with dismal results
  • how hard the process had been
  • that competition was really tough, and on and on.

I heard interviewees do this many times in my career.  I would think to myself, “I wonder what’s wrong with them. Why are they telling me all this?”  Hopefully, what was on the resume would shed positive light. Yet, that conversation was in my head. What comes out of your mouth can kill the interview before it starts. So shut up! Don’t put anything out there that may give an interviewer the feeling, that they might be interviewing a dud. That statement can imply a lot about a candidate like they’re:

  • Negative
  • Lack confidence
  • Not prepared to go the mile, if they don’t even understand that looking for a job is a  process

But I’ve learned to be objective and give a person a chance. After all, if we are truthful to ourselves, none of us made it without someone else being apart of our success. With that said, I don’t think people realize that everything they say or do, from the time they enter the ‘interview zone’ is considered. Remember the interviewer is not your friend and oh yes, you’re being sized up. Hey, everyone wants to believe that they are hiring a super stud or studette that is going to move their business forward.
