When Job Interviewers Use Unethical Interviewing Tactics
I was reading a disturbing article in a forum today, about a individual who had gone on several interviews, but was not being offered a position. They were in the design field and the enterviewers would ask very specific questions about how they could contribute or resolve an immediate problem they were having. For example:
1. If you were hired today, what changes 3 changes would you immediately make to our website?
2. Can you send me some of your best examples, via email?
There were other questions, but I was appalled. It’s bad enough that you have to compete against not 10 but maybe 100 candidates for the same position. But when an employer takes advantage of our current situation, the slow economy, that’s sick.
Well, you don’t have to give over your knowledge, and prove yourself a sucker. There is an appropriate answer for every question. Even ones you don’t want to answer. Listen, you can always say that you are uncomfortable responding because that answer may only provide a bandaid approach to a strategy. It may not deliver the long term results that this company is looking for.
As far as forwarding examples, have a portfolio of information available at the interview. This will visually demonstrate your skill level for a particular aspect of the job. Any good interviewer will be able to gauge your skill level and project that skill level into the position they desire to fill. A company that employs these types of tactics, isn’t going to value you as an employer.
