Messed Up In The Interview? – Laugh It Off

If you haven’t interviewed in a while, it’s okay if you are horrible. In fact you probably will be horrible. Ah, don’t freak out, hit  your head against the wall, hit yourself on the forehead with your hand, have a tantrum. It will come in stride.

As you get back onto the interview train, keep hooking up those learning cars, but more important, learn to laugh at yourself. Man if you listen to the news all day, read the paper, listen to your family and friends who are negative, it will be too much. The media has been asking the question, or priming us and saying things like, “are we in a recession?  We are in a recession.” Today, I was looking at the news and she stated that we are 12 months into the recession. So do we have,  more months. Listen you have to find some peace in your mind while everything around  you is moving at it’s own pace.

So, I decided to deviate from the formal interview stuff and talk about the importance of laughing at oneself. I’m not going to get technical, or clinical. Laughing has it’s physical benefits. Simply, it make you feel good. If your job search isn’t going well, not getting good interviews, or any interviews, use laughter as a pick you up.

Let’s say you’ve practiced your responses to a heap of interview questions, and you are ready. Your ready to strutt your stuff. But the end result, is that you fumble over the questions, or because of your performance during the interview, you sounded like a dork. Go out in your car and laugh it off. No beating yourself up. The good point is that you, made a true effort to get back out into the job market and compete. You got an interview, don’t know if you’ll get hired, but you answered the best you could.

Evaluate what happened, and use laughter to grow. I remember a position I interviewed for, and this was the final stage in the interview process. The interviewer, asked me what shows I watched.

I thought to myself, “I got this one”. My response was true, but what came out of my mouth, wasn’t what I wanted to say. I blurted, ” Oh I watch CNN and Animal Planet”. ANIMAL PLANET – OH CRAP!  But it was the truth. I actually love Animal Planet.  Now here is the kicker – my interviewer also loved Animal Planet. We digressed for a few minutes and talked about the most recent episode. I was hired for the position. Don’t know if that made a difference, but it was the truth.  I laughed all the way home. I couldn’t believe I gave that response. At that point I wasn’t even worried whether I would get the position.

There are other foopahs I’ve made during the interview process, but hopefully you get the point. We can laugh at others, learn to laugh at yourself. If you totally screw up the interview, work on getting better by asking someone to help you. I’m positive you will enjoy the process more if you incorporate some laughter along the way.
