Baby Boomer Job Fair Tips

Hey Baby Boomer.  Attending job fairs can be a stressful experience, for anyone of any age, even a Baby Boomer.  Hmmm, especially a baby boomer. First, you only have a few minutes to give you “hire me” commercial.  Then you have to look like success. Whatever that means. Then in the back of your mind, you might be thinking of all the reasons you won’t get hired, you can’t see your competition, what is the recruiter really mean — stop!

So what you’re a seasoned professional, who happens to be back in the job market, you can make some deadly mistakes while attending job fairs.

Maybe it’s been a long time since you’ve had to look for a position. You’ve had the pleasure of longevity and success with an employer or industry. Or maybe life has changed and you are a late comer to the whole job search thing.  If that’s the case, selling yourself, when competing for a position may be a quality you have to enhance.

When you think about it selling yourself, competing against the invisible competitors, networking, being socially approachable, you have to do something different. My children used to call it, “making friends”.  Let me explain and preface this by saying

So what you are not a friendly person or you are shy or even scared you can still be successful at the job fair. However, it will take a little work, and a small price to be paid.

Pay what price! Now stay with me. Remember you have to do something different. Paying a price is simply the following:

You have to talk to other people. Go someplace out of your comfort zone and talk to other people. The grocery store, the bank, your neighbor, the movies, etc. Even if all you can say is, “hi”, just do it. Practice, practice, practice. This is so important because you will need to talk to people and employers at the job fair. If you are uncomfortable, it shows. It will show in the way you approach an employer’s booth, your handshake, eye contact, what you say, etc.

If you follow this Baby Boomer Job Fair Tip, you will be steps closer to getting the job you want. You will be able to navigate through a job fair better than other baby boomers with confidence.
