Phone Interview Secret Exposed!
If you have ever been interviewed over the telephone, you may have felt like a fish out of water. You can’t see whom you are talking to, or who else might be listening. You know there are secrets to interviewing over the phone. Many of these secrets aren’t talked about, or even acknowledged in terms of being formally incorporated into a company’s interview process. I have interviewed many people in my career of the phone and it’s a very common practice now. It’s a way for any company to cost effectively screen job candidates, while saving time. And time is money. Right! So you had better get ready.
At this point, you are going through the 2nd phase of the interview process, in case you didn’t know. The 1st phase was when you submitted your resume; it was reviewed, and then warranted further discussion. That’s where you came in. Yes. So what happens on the other end? There’s a lot of stuff going on, at the end of the phone.
I want to tell you a secret. I want to help you understand it a little better in term of the levels of listening that’s going on. Well there about four levels of listening that may occur during the phone interview. That’s if you don’t screw up early on. Simply put:
1. Listening to – what words you use, how well you articulate your work history, respond to the questions, also background noise, etc.
2. Listening at – any nervous tension, pompousness, confident, responses to questions
3. Listening with – we’re having a good conversation, nice exchange back and forth, you are adding value.
4. Listening for – are you adding value, possible job match, etc. The result is that you move onto the next stage – the face to face.
Now someone else may categorize these a little different, but that’s okay as long as you get the point. I have some more good stuff to share on this topic, but can’t give it all to you right now

I liked the 4 levels of listening. Didn’t realize that was something people did. I guess when you are interviewing you are under the microscope.
