Will You Be Ready By Midnight? Take These Steps

Every year each of us makes a date with ourselves, either voluntary or by default. We take a breathe of relief, make a toast, commit to something with no intention of  actually following through, pacify our failures or loses, etc. The year has it’s way with our lives, and we repeat the process again, and again. This year will you be ready by midnight? Will you 2011 deliver what you want, if you take a little time to get your goals in place?  Hmm “goals”. Kind of cliché’ish you’re thinking. Let me suggest that is a way to bounce into action starting January 1, 2011 when the clock strikes 12:01 am.

Can I recommend that if you haven’t devised your goals for 2011 you do the following before the New Years begins. You still have time.

Review what you did in 2010. If you didn’t do anything, then decide now to change that plan.  List what you’ve accomplished. Take a minute and do a happy dance, or give yourself a pat on the back in recognition of your accomplishments (10 minutes). Next, work through the action steps listed below.  Here are some suggestions to get your started. Please add to it as appropriate.

Action Step #1 – Identify Your Three To Four Greatest Accomplishments In 2010.

Even if 2010 sucked for you, don’t forget to consider small successes that you are proud of.

Action Step # 2 –  Analyze What You Learned from Each Accomplishment.

From step number one write down what you learned from each accomplishment.

Action Step # 3 –  Identify Your Most Pressing Disappointments Of 2010.

We don’t like thinking about our mistakes. But we must, because that’s where the learning happens. Repeat action step #2 and analyze what you learned, and would do differently in future situations.

Action Step # 4 – Make a list of your goals for 2011.

Don’t write a dissertation, or get out the binder, with markers. Not yet. List 3 goals you want to accomplish in 2011. Make sure they are SMART goals:

  • Simple
  • Measurable
  • Action oriented
  • Realistic
  • Time bound

Action Step # 5  Make a date with yourself right now.

Identify when you will write out how you will accomplish these three (3) goals within the next 24 hours. If you are not sure about how to put your goals into action, of course you can drop me a line.

2011 is your year. The year you will accomplish, what you so desire. Now, if you put this work aside and do nothing, you will have an incredible REPEAT. If you want to move forward, you will keep your date with yourself. Put it on your calendar, as an appointment in your cell phone, or as a pop up reminder on your computer. Look at the clock. Did you finish before midnight?  Happy New Year, you’re off to a great start.
