Show Passion During Interviews

“Please answer the following question”, says the interviewer on the opposite side of the table. They pause. You think, “Oh gosh, there going to ask me about this gap in employment! Did I dress up my resume too much, and now they are going to pick it apart!”.

The interviewer continues, “What are you the most passionate about in the work you’ve done in your last job?” Your mind is saying, “What kind of kakamamee question is that?”. Yet you are smiling trying to think of a good answer. After all the work you currently do, is just work, you’re aren’t passionate about anything but Fridays.  You ask the interviewer to repeat the question. They do. Now you’ve had time to process the answer, and here it goes.

“I am most passionate about being a part of a team and leading the team on occasion to work on problems that others thought were impossible to solve.”

“Hmmm”, responds the interviewer. Good answer. Now let me tell you why.

Sometimes candidates try to find the perfect answer and they just spew out some words. As an interviewer, I looked at peoples body language, listened to how and when they emphasized their words, the expression on their face. You can sense and see a candidates passion. It’s kind of like letting your light shine. I want to feel what you, the interviewee is saying.
