Previously I never really thought much about resume formats but one day I realized having periods of unemployment on my resume may be costing me interview opportunities. Knowing how to find good resume formats is the key.
To take the focus off of these gaps in my employment history, I wanted to design my resume so the focus is on the skills I have and how I have applied them successfully in my career. I found out there was a functional resume format which does just what I was looking for. My situation is one that many people find themselves in. They find a job they really want to land but when they take a look at their resume, they feel as though it is holding them back.
For years, I gave up on even applying for these dream jobs because I knew I would not get them until I realized there are different formats for resumes which could really help me. I was delighted to learn about the many resume formats available but first I had to spend some time contemplating which format was best for me. I did not simply pick the format I thought was the prettiest but instead focused on which format would be the most appealing to potential employers. This involved some research. I had to first figure out how many formats of resumes where available.
After I compiled a list of formats, I looked for information on the advantages and disadvantages of each format. Then I looked for recommended uses for each format. Before my resume was complete, I spent some time testing out each of the resume formats. I did not take this process lightly and designed entire resumes with a few different formats. I viewed these resumes from an employerís perspective. It was not an easy process but it really worked for me. I knew the format I had chosen would help me to stand out.
