Any other questions your interviewer asks – answer them honestly in the first person. You are discovering something at this point: it’s very hard to answer interview questions about you without feeling like a conceited jerk. Ignore the feeling. Everyone – and I mean everyone – gets it. Worry about being honest. An experienced interviewer has lie radar, and can tell if you’re fudging.

That doesn’t mean you have to bring up bad things and it doesn’t mean you have to dwell on them. This especially goes for silent pauses. Sit quietly during these and wait for the interviewer to speak again; don’t feel like you have to fill it up with anything. Word to the wise: one way military and police interviewers get their information is by sitting silently. The interviewee almost always feels compelled to fill the silence, and it’s almost always to their disadvantage to do so. Don’t fall into the trap!

Two questions you should be prepared to answer: what is your strongest point, and what is your weakest point. Be honest about both: if your strongest point is competitiveness, say so. Weak points are touchy, but again, pick something real and describe not only it, but the steps you’re taking to eliminate it. So suppose you love sports and don’t really love homework. Strong point: competitive and athletic. Weak point: put off homework, but you’re trying to change that by making it a habit to work on homework at school during your free period and get tutoring help. See how that works? You can change a weak point to a strong point by showing that you are taking steps to eliminate your problem that will also make you a better person overall.

Introduction

So you’re young, you want to have fun, and the summer stretches nearly endlessly before you. Problem is, you’re flat broke. Or you need to earn cash for college. Or you just want to get in some good job experience right now.

The answer to that’s always been to get a job. But our job market is drying up, even for the burger flipping positions. If you want to dress in something besides polyester and get more customer service experience than “you want fries with that,” it’s time to learn about a little something called the job interview.

Here’s the kicker: in-person interviews aren’t that different from the world you know and love. You are judged on your appearance and your presentation more than your resume, partly because you probably don’t have a huge resume to begin with. That means it’s time to dump the low-rise jeans and put on Mom’s slacks. Guys get a haircut and trim back the goatee. Come back on Monday for Tip #1.
