For example most prepared candidates can talk about the company at length and why they believe they are a fit for the job, but can be thrown off by a quirky questions.

For example if you are interviewing for a nationally recognized company what has a website, and ad campaigns on tv you might want to pay attention. In todays environment companies change slogans, change company names, CEO’s, etc.

If caught off guard you will stumble your way through the question. Whatever you do, don’t start tapping your pen, looking down, looking around or humming to yourself. The interviewer already knows you may not know the answer. Whatever you do, don’t just blurt out some stupid answer. This is not, “Wheel of Fortune”. By the way, I love that game. And you know, don’t get embarrassed.

Being honest about not knowing the answer is sometimes the best tactic. Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know”.

If you know the answer, but feel you just swallowed a cotton ball and are having trouble answering it on the spot, do this. Recognize it’s your nerves. You are feeling a little stress right about now.

Ask for a minute to think about the question. This is not the time to pull out your cheat sheet. It’s not on there anyway. If you still can’t remember, just say, “I don’t know”. If you do have the answer, respond with a grin and belt it out.

The Two Hardest Questions

Two questions you should be prepared to answer: what is your strongest point, and what is your weakest point. Be honest about both: if your strongest point is competitiveness, say so. Weak points are touchy, but again, pick something real and describe not only it, but the steps you’re taking to eliminate it. So suppose you love sports and don’t really love homework. Strong point: competitive and athletic. Weak point: put off homework, but you’re trying to change that by making it a habit to work on homework at school during your free period and get tutoring help. See how that works? You can change a weak point to a strong point by showing that you are taking steps to eliminate your problem that will also make you a better person overall.
