Call me an optimist, but I’ve been reading quite a bit lately about the economy. It appears that things are starting to pick up and that the job market is finally starting to turn around. This is great news for all of us, but especially those of you who are searching for a new job this year! Here is a brief list of industries that are expected to supply a great deal of jobs for 2009 and beyond.

2009 Jobs in Computers and Engineering

Projected to increase by 20% over the next decade, you can’t go wrong by getting skills in the computer and engineering fields. Keep in mind, as these companies grow they’ll need administrative, accounting and sales personnel to go along with the techies. IBM is currently hiring, and plans to create at least 1300 jobs by 2010.

2009 Jobs in Government

Always a steady field of work. Make sure you check for local government jobs frequently as they often have limited application periods. Follow the job application instructions by the letter to be sure your application is considered.

2009 Green Jobs in Renewable Energy & Environmental

Many initiatives are underway to save our great earth. Think GREEN. Sustainable energy is hot! There are jobs in everything green from solar power to electric automobiles. Organizations in this industry are most likely to experience significant growth. Some of the top green companies to check out include Ausra, SolFocus, Southwest Wind Power, First Solar and Cool Earth Solar.

2009 Jobs in Healthcare

The healthcare field is constantly in need of great people. It also resides close to the top of every list for jobs over the next decade. It is important to keep in mind that just like with the tech industry, you don’t necessarily have be a medical professional to get hired as these employers need many different types of workers. Some healtcare companies that are hiring in 2009 include Gentiva Health Services, Sutter Health, Tenet Healtcare Corp., Kaiser Permanente and United Health Group.

2009 Jobs in Construction

Construction is one of the first sectors to experience a flurry of hiring following a recession. Many of the stimulus package inclusions are targeted to the construction industry as well. The Associated General Contractors of America estimates the package will fund 650,000 new construction jobs, and an additional 300,000 jobs in materials and equipment supply. Check out the AGS stimulus website to find out where the job opportunities are.

Keep your head up and dig. The jobs are out there! You’ve gotta dig! Make sure you utilize all the career resources at your disposal – from job search sites to your professional contacts.
